30.04.2008 (Turkmenistan.Ru) The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Miroslav Jenca of Slovakia as his Special Representative and head of the United Nations Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia. Before this appointment, Jenca headed the Secretariat of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Slovakia. A group of the UN international staff has already been working in the Center opened in the capital of Turkmenistan in December 2007. US$ 2.3 million has been allocated for its operations, the UN News Service reports.
The UN Regional Center for Central Asia has a mandate to assist the governments of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in building up the capacity in peaceful settlement of disputes and conflict prevention through dialogue and attraction of international support. The UN Center has become the first of five regional missions that the UN Secretariat’s Department for Political Issues intends to open in the nearest future.
